Richland County sees minor flooding during severe storm

Business owners are relieved that the heavy rainfall didn't bring severe flooding on Thursday.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A severe weather made its way to the Midlands, businesses in the Five Points area prepared for the worst.

Five Points and other areas of Columbia, have had a long history of flooding during heavy rainfall.

Fortunately, Thursday's severe storm didn't bring heavy flooding to the area.

"I feel so good," says Sean Schoppell, director of the art space at Tapp's Outpost in Five Points. "We were a little bit nervous because we are still trying to figure out what it's like to be down here, and I used to live right outside of Five Points and it flooded a lot when I lived here, but it seems like something happened where it's not as bad anymore. I don't know what, but I'm happy that we're not underwater and don't have to move a whole bunch of stuff now."

Part of the minor flooding might have something to do with the City of Columbia's efforts to improve the storm water system.

Columbia Water Spokesman Robert Yanity, spoke with News 19 about the steps the city has taken to mediate flooding in areas.

"That's actually an ongoing thing that we do so there's a lot less work in the event of a storm," says Yanity. "Our public works folks were on standby too in case they have to barricade areas that may be flooded or if they have to get out and deal with trees or anything like that."

The public works crews cleared out storm drains ahead of the storm.
