Washington, DC (KARE) - Sen. Al Franken has set his resignation date for Jan. 2, 2018, according to a spokesperson for the senator.

Franken's office says Lt. Gov. Tina Smith is scheduled to be sworn in on Jan. 3.

Smith was chosen by Gov. Mark Dayton to replace Franken until a November 2018 election. Smith has announced her intention to run to finish out Franken's term, which goes through 2020. Minnesota State Senator Karin Housley (R-St. Marys Point) is also running.

Franken announced his intention to resign amid several sexual misconduct allegations.
