Seven children were bitten by a stray dog, believed to be a pit bull, inside a Charlotte elementary school Monday, police said.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, Animal Care & Control officers responded to a reported stray dog at Lansdowne Elementary School in south Charlotte around 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Police said the dog went onto the school’s playground and while the kids were being taken inside the building, the dog managed to get inside. Police said the dog became overstimulated by several frightened children’s reactions and began to jump and bite them.

An official with CMPD AC&C said they don't believe the dog, which is 10 months old, approached the children to attack. The dog will be kept in a 10-day quarantine, which is standard protocol after any incident involving a dog biting a person. After the 10 days, authorities said a decision will be made as to whether the dog will remain a pet. The dog's rabies vaccination was up to date, according to Animal Control.

A teacher was able to control the dog and contacted the owner based on information on the dog’s tag. Police said the owner of the dog picked it up and left before police arrived at the scene. The children's injuries were mostly on their legs, officials said.

The dog was described as a silver and white male pit bull named “Bro.”
