USC and Clemson each have a receiver who is on the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award which goes to college football's top receiver.
Junior Deebo Samuel, a preseason third-team All-SEC selection makes the list.
The top returning receiver on the the USC team with 71 career catches for 944 yards, Samuel has nine career touchdowns - six on the ground, two receiving and one on a kickoff return. The Inman, SC native tied the school’s single-game record with 14 receptions and set Birmingham Bowl records with 14 catches for 190 yards against USF. He previously was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, which is given to America’s College Player of the Year, and the Paul Hornung Award, given annually to the most versatile player in major college football.
Cain, a junior receiver for the Tigers, figures to have an even more prominent role this year for Clemson. He had 38 receptions for 724 yards and nine touchdowns last year for Clemson’s national championship team. His 19.1 yards per reception led the team and was the second most by any Tiger with at least 30 receptions since 1993.
Cain’s nine receiving touchdowns were seventh most in school history and a record for a non-starter. Cain and All-American Mike Williams played the same position and were rarely in the game at the same time last year.
He had a career-high 125 receiving yards on five catches and two touchdowns in the win over Syracuse last year. The native of Tampa, Fla., had five receptions for 94 yards against Alabama in the national championship game a year ago.
