When the seniors on the USC volleyball team are honored Friday night, a Lugoff-Elgin graduate will be part of that celebration.

Megan Kirkland came to USC as a preferred walk-on but eventually earned a scholarship "which meant the world to me".

Kirkland is a defensive specialist for the Gamecocks and she was part of Sunday's win over a Missouri team that was ranked 21st in the country. That marked the first win over a ranked team for the program in 10 years. So, Kirkland knows that when her career comes to a close in the coming weeks, she can say maximized her talent.

"It just shows you can do anything you can set your mind to, which is what I was told growing up," Kirkland said.

:'It was always my dream growing up to play Division I volleyball."

While there are four matches left in the regular season, Friday night will be the official senior night when Kirkland and the rest of her class will be forgiven for doing a little reminiscing about the decisions that brought them to USC.

"I have grown so much these last four years and am extremely thankful to Carolina for all the opportunities that have been provided."
