Search underway for suspect after pursuit, crash near Blythewood

The pursuit began on I-77 but soon ended due to the speed of the suspect and the danger posed to other drivers on the busy route on Friday afternoon.

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — Authorities are looking for a suspect they said ran from a traffic stop on I-77 on Friday afternoon.

According to Master Trooper David Jones with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 4:40 p.m. after a trooper spotted a violation and attempted to stop the suspect.

Jones said that, at first, the suspect appeared to be pulling over but quickly drove away along the interstate instead. Due to the amount of traffic on the interstate at the time and the speed of the escaping driver, Jones said the trooper called off the pursuit.

However, the suspect continued his escape onto nearby roads where he ultimately crashed into another vehicle near the intersection of Wilson Boulevard and Turkey Farm Road.

The suspect then ran from the vehicle and hasn't yet been caught. Authorities believe they know who they are looking for, however.

The occupants of the other vehicle had minor injuries, Jones said.

Anyone with information about the suspect can call Midlands Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
