Separate crashes claim four lives in Clarendon County

The crashes all happened over a period of fewer than 12 hours.

CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating three deadly crashes in Clarendon County that happened within just hours of one another and claimed four lives.

According to Lance Corporal Tyler Tidwell, the first of those three crashes happened on US-521 near Georgia Pacific around or before 7 a.m. Saturday The crash scene was around five miles south of Alcolu.

Tidwell said there was one vehicle involved, a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban with two people inside when it crashed while heading north on US-521. Tidwell said the vehicle ran off the road to the right, overcorrected and crossed over to the left, and struck a tree. Both people inside were killed in the crash.

The Clarendon County Coroner's Office has since identified the victims as 26-year-old Deandre Morrow and 29-year-old Charlie Brunson, both of Sumter County.

The next crash, the trooper said, happened later the same day on US-15 near Nelson's Ferry Road, roughly 5 miles south of Summerton, around 6 p.m.

Tidwell said a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo was heading south on US-15 when it ran off the road to the right, overcorrected, and then ran off the left side, hitting several trees and then a ditch. The driver, who died from injuries sustained in the crash, was the only occupant.

A third fatal crash then occurred just before 1 a.m. on Sunday on I-95 near mile marker 104. According to Master Trooper Brian Lee, this crash also involved a single vehicle, a 2017 Jeep, that ran off the road to the right and hit several trees. The driver died from their injuries.

The coroner's office said the names of the victims in the latter two crashes were not currently available.
