St. Augstine, FL (Action News Jax/Associated Press) -Widespread flooding from Hurricane Matthew has trapped people inside their homes and businesses in St. Augustine, Florida.
A reporter with Action News Jax shared video of hunkering down at the Casablanca Inn. A person standing on the building's porch said about 20 people were inside.
The Category 3 storm battered the city much of Friday with waves and storm surge that could top 8 feet.
Local officials said roughly half of St. Augustine's 14,000 residents chose to stay in their homes.
Meanwhile, rough seas could be seen along low-lying areas of Florida's eastern coast, including Jacksonville.
While the storm continued to batter areas north, clean up was underway in Melbourne.
Forecasters say storm surge and inland flooding remain potentially life-threatening hazards even if Matthew remains offshore.
