Woman hopped in her bathtub to ride out SC tornado

The woman escaped serious injury by seeking shelter in her bathroom.

CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. — A South Carolina woman says she survived an apparent tornado by going to her bathroom and jumping in the tub.

Virginia Ann Harrion sent in photos of the damage that happened to her home near Lake Marion in Clarendon County during Friday's storms.

She told News19 she was inside her home at the time of the storm. When she saw the severe weather approaching, she ran into the bathroom and got into the tub.

Shortly afterward, a tree fell on her home, splitting it in two. But she wasn't injured.

A tornado warning was issued for Clarendon County around the time of the incident, and News19 Chief Meteorologist Jim Gandy says the damage seen in photos that Harrion took is consistent with tornado damage.

A National Weather Service survey team is expected to visit the area Saturday to determine if it was indeed a twister.
