NFL Stars Inspire Kids with Youth Football Camp

Two NFL stars returned to the Midlands on Saturday for a Back to School Bash in Calhoun County. News19's Lana Harris reports.

Calhoun, SC (WLTX) - South Carolina natives and current NFL stars Alshon Jeffery and Mike Williams dropped in to Calhoun County today for Jeffery's first youth football camp and back to school bash.

"It was my dream to see a real life football player," one youth camp attendee said.

It was a dream come true for a lot of boys and girls, as there were over 500 kids in attendance.

"I had people come down and talk to me when I was younger so it's only right I do the same," Jeffery says.

Jeffery says that's what motivated him to start the camp - he now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles.

"The need someone to look up to, just like when I was coming up I needed someone to look up to," Jeffery says.

"You know, coming from Lake Marion high school, not too many people make it out," said Mike Williams, who plays for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Williams says his goal is to show the kids they can.

"It's possible to come from this area and make it out," Williams said. "Education first, continue to work hard, and everything will work out for you."

If making a splash in these kids' lives was the goal, the two were pretty successful.

"I learned that it's important to help your community out when you make it one day," said one attendee.

"That you've got to work hard and never give up," said another attendee.

"Confidence in yourself and never to quit," another attendee said.

"If you have a dream, then go for it," said another attendee.

Jeffery says he hopes to start a program to give scholarships to as many kids as he can.
