Woman Wins Lottery Twice in One Day

A North Carolina woman won the lottery twice on Sunday, netting $10,000, then $1 million.

Michelle Shuffler said she and her husband don't normally play the lottery, but on Sunday, he had a few bucks in his pocket, so they decided to give it a shot.

The couple stopped at the Cubbard Express gas station in Lenoir, N.C., and won their $10,000 on a Million Dollar Fever scratch-off ticket. They were in complete disbelief, yet had the wherewithal to press their luck once more.

"We saw that the game had a million dollar prize," Shuffler told the N.C. Education Lottery. "So we decided, 'Why not try to beat the odds again?'"

The couple went to the Murphy Express in Granite Falls, about 22 miles from the Lenoir gas station they won at earlier.

They bought another Million Dollar Fever ticket and won the $1 million. "It's a miracle," Shuffler said.

She claimed her winnings on Monday. The lottery said she chose to receive the $1 million in annual payments of $50,000. The alternative was a lump sum of $600,000.

She's already received her first $50,000, which after taxes, comes out to about $35,000. Shuffler plans to use the money for retirement and for her children's college education.
