COLUMBIA (AP) -- A grocery store chain is getting started on what it says will be South Carolina's first totally "green" grocery store.

Food Lion is planning to break ground Tuesday on a new store in Columbia.

The chain says the grocery store will be the state's first to have Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or "LEED," certification. That standard is monitored by the U.S. Green Building Council.

The store will have skylights to reduce the need for some electric lighting and low-flow water fixtures. This will help save 20% each year on energy consumption and more than 40% on water.

Food Lion hopes to have the store on Hardscrabble Road open later this year.
