Columbia (WLTX) -- Organizers of a cleanup effort of the Saluda River say 100 volunteers worked to clean the banks of the river Saturday as part of the annual Beach Sweep-River Sweep program.
According to a Monday news release, the effort focused on the Lower Saluda River at Riverbanks Zoo, and volunteers gathered 90 bags of litter, recycled 701 aluminum cans, 744 glass bottles, and 460 plastic bottles.
Officials say the volunteers included members of Boy Scout Troop 100, Columbia College, Columbia Friends, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Columbia, the USC Pastafarians and Venture Crew 312.
