I'm not sure about all of you, but I'm just itching to start working on my front lawn this year! Last year's drought has severely damaged my nice lawn, and, as an avid golfer, I need my green grass to stay happy.
So, I've got the grass seed, fertilizer, top soil, and all the tools ready to start the healing process.
And, despite the wonderful recent weather, I've been doing my best to restrain myself from starting...
Why? Well, the nice weather can be a bit misleading this time of year and hard freezes are still quite possible through the rest of the month!
In fact, as of this week, there's only a 25% chance that we've seen the last freeze of the season. The AVERAGE last freeze typically doesn't arrive until late March.
Remember last year? We had a freakish late freeze occur in early April which damaged a lot of crops across the southeastern U.S. Thus, planting anything in March (especially early March) should be considered a risk.
So when IS a good time to start planting? Typically the last week in March or the first few weeks of April is a good time to start things up. However, the latest freeze ever occurred on Apr. 24 (in 1982 and 1986), so you're not guaranteed a freezeless ground until the end of next month.
In the meantime, I have to just stare at my brown, cruddy looking grass out front and wait a few more weeks...it's pure torture!
