Beginning in April, numerous Relay For Life events will be taking place across the Midlands and WLTX is proud to be a sponsor. | The First Tee |
In
1997, the World Golf Foundation created The
First Tee to introduce young people of all backgrounds
to the game of golf by creating affordable and accessible
golf facilities for those who had not previously had
exposure to the game and its positive values. More than 350,000
boys and girls from all over the world have benefited
from The First Tee, and, now, the program has made it
to the Midlands. WLTX is proud to be a sponsor
of The First Tee, which is about much more than
golf. Through the game of golf, the program gives
young people the opportunity to develop life-enhancing
values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship. The First Tee has established Nine Core Values that
represent some of the many inherently positive values
connected with the game of golf. These Nine Core
Values have been incorporated into The First Tee Experience:
- Honesty
- Integrity
- Sportsmanship
- Respect
- Confidence
- Responsibility
- Perseverance
- Courtesy
- Judgment
The First
Tee is offered in Columbia and Sumter.

| CASA |
Richland
County CASA provides quality volunteer Guardian ad
Litem and
legal representation that ensures each abused and neglected
child has a safe, permanent, and nurturing home. CASA's
highly trained volunteer Guardians help the Richland
County Family Court make child-centered decisions by
gathering information and presenting unbiased recommendations
to family court judges.
This
year, over 500 new children will enter RichlandCounty's child protective services system. Unfortunately,
due to a shortage of funding and volunteers, only 70%
of these children will receive a Guardian ad
Litem from CASA. The
children who are lucky enough to receive a CASA volunteer
are blessed with an advocate who will work diligently
to ensure that child's needs are being met, whether
those needs are medical, behavioral, therapeutic or
educational. CASA volunteers track and report
the parents' progress made regarding treatment plans
ordered by the court, and must ultimately make a determination
whether the family can be successfully reunited. If
that is not possible, the volunteer must recommend
an alternative plan, such as relative custody or adoption.
While the parents have attorneys to represent their
interests and the Department of Social Services provides
services to the family unit, the CASA volunteer
Guardian ad Litem is
the one with sole responsibility for protecting the
child's best interests.
