JDRF Palmetto Chapter Hosts Women of Type 1 Diabetes Conference

Columbia, SC (WLTX) South Carolina sits at number 10 for the number of those living with Diabetes. That's one reason why almost 90 mothers and daughters came together for the JDRF Palmetto Women of Type One Diabetes Conference at the Darla Moore School of Business on the Campus of the University of South Carolina Saturday.

The Palmetto chapter of JDRF organized and hosted the event to give women the opportunity to learn about the latest research as they share information with each other about fighting the disease.  Break-out sessions included authors who live with Type One, information on how to live life well, while having the disease, and the importance of creating community.  Organizer, Beth McCrary tells News 19, "Sharing about the importance of positive role models, we've got caregivers here talking with the teens, answering questions that they have. We've got people here talking about advocacy."

One topic also of importance is the power of advocacy.  McCrary says recognizing the power of your voice, through sharing your stories and helping each other is very important.  She says, "We hope the women leave here today empowered and energized to live life well, with this very challenging disease. It’s all about the language we use because, yes it is a battle of sorts, but it’s also about learning to live well, to overcome those bad days when the battle is tough and to know we can live well with Type 1 Diabetes in our homes."
