Deidra Duncan

Columbia SC (WLTX) --  There's never a good time to find a lump in your breast, but for Deidra Duncan that revelation came on her honeymoon in October 2008.

"When I put my hand on it I knew right away it was breast cancer," Duncan said.

Although her breast cancer was caught at an early stage, a  scan showed that the cancer had spread to her spine and bones.  Some how even after a bilateral mastectomy Duncan manages to find something to smile about every day.

"I can't wake up every morning to die.  I have to wake up every morning to live.  The bad days aren't really bad days they're more like bad minutes.  Having cancer helps you focus on other people which I think is my calling now," Duncan said.

Cancer has made a number of stops in Duncan's family.  Her grandmother and two aunts had breast cancer, and her uncle and grandfather both were prostate cancer patients.

Through it all Duncan vows to be the longest surviving stage 4 cancer patient.  It's her mantra and one that she will share with anyone.

"If this is how I'm supposed to die.  I'm going out kicking and screaming, but I'm going out having a good time.  Cancer is going to know it was in a fight with me," Duncan said.
