Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) -- On the 19th of every month, News19 takes time to stress to you the importance of performing a monthly self breast exam.

We are on your side with information about a simple piece of foam that in some respects could mean the difference between life and death for some women.

Health care experts suggest that starting at age 40, women should have a yearly mammogram performed.  Studies have shown one reason why women do not go is because of a fear of pain and discomfort from the compression that is involved in testing.

The MammoPad is a soft foam breast cushion that can help relieve the discomfort many women feel during a mammogram. The cushion is placed on the surface of the image detector, providing a softer, more comfortable mammogram.

Clinical studies show three out of every four women experience an average 50 percent decrease in discomfort with MammoPad.
While the breast cushion provides comfort, it does not compromise the high level of image quality needed for a routine mammogram or require increased radiation dose during a mammogram.

A number of Breast Centers in the Midlands offer the service at no additional charge.
