Riverbanks Zoo Sets New Attendance Record

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia's Riverbanks Zoo has set another attendance record, welcoming over one million visitors for the fifth straight year.

The zoo said Tuesday that 1,053,377 came to the park during the 2013-2014 fiscal year that ended in June. That's up from the 1,039,372 that visited the year before.

Riverbanks President and CEO Satch Krantz attributes the growth in part to the park's added attractions.

"We constantly strive to provide our visitors with exciting and participatory opportunities such as the recent addition of the Zoo's zip line canopy tours," Krantz said. "This invigorating attraction includes a 1,000-foot flight over the lower Saluda River."

Earlier this year, the zoo announced it will begin a $36 million expansion called Destination Riverbanks. It will include a seal/sea lion exhibit, a new grizzly bear, and a children's garden, among other amenities.

The zoo says they hope the new attractions will drive more out-of-town visitors, which they say already account for about half of the park's guests.
