When Irmo was struggling in the month of January, senior post player Winston Hill and the other seniors kept the team from throwing in the towel. Once they qualified for the post-season, Hill and the Yellow Jackets have caught fire and now they are one win away from an improbable state championship.
Winston, who has offers to play at the next level from Francis Marion and Augusta University, has worked just as hard on his academics. After struggling a couple of years ago, Winston is maintaining a healthy 3.5 grade point average.
Head coach Tim Whippel says his personality and his height (6 feet, 7 inches) are what causes people to gravitate towards him. That personality will be needed this week as Irmo gets ready to face Dorman for the 5A state championship.
