Two Killed in Newberry County Accident Involving an Ambulance Identified

Newberry, SC ( WLTX ) -- The Newberry County Coroner's Office  has identified two Presbyterian College students killed in an accident that happened Friday night, involving an ambulance.

Officials say 22 - year - old Lea Kraemer and 23 - year -old Sarah Doelker died of blunt force injuries. They say the women were passengers in a 2008 Volkswagon Jetta that collided with a Newberry County ambulance. It happened Friday night about 9:20  in the eastbound lane on US - 76.

They say the ambulance was headed to an emergency with red lights and sirens on, when the Jetta moved off the road to yield the right of way to the ambulance, the ambulance and car collided.

The driver of the Jetta, 20 - year -old Caroline Smith , passengers 20 - year - old , Allen Butt, and 19 - year -old , Luke R. Thomas were all injured and transported to the hospital, according to Highway Patrol.

The driver of the ambulance, 38 - year- old Christopher Leagan, and passenger, 24-year- old Ashly Stevens were injured as well and taken to the hospital.

Highway Patrol says all were wearing a seatbelt upon the crash, and the accident is still under investigation.
