Hartsville, SC (WLTX) -- A fire at a Darlington County fertilizer plant burned for several hours Monday night, but officials say no injuries were reported.
Flames over the Agrium Rainbow plant lit up the night sky Monday, and firefighters were working Tuedsay morning to put out hot spots.
Clouds of smoke billowed from the plant, which manufactures fertilizer for tobacco and other plants. According to the Associated Press, only a few workers were inside the plant when the fire started at about 7 p.m. Monday.
Adam Myrick with the Department of Health and Environmental Control said there is not indication of hazardous chemicals in the smoke. Frefighters were said to be pumping water from the town lake. Myrick said that officials with the Environmental Protection Agency planned to check the water of the lake, which is next to the plant.
The American Red Cross set up a shelter at T.B. Thomas Sports Center at 701 West Washington Street behind Hartsville High School that housed about 75 people. Officials say the plant employed about 50 people.
