Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- A tropical wave nearly 250 miles east of Martinique is becoming more organized.

It could be classified as a tropical depression later Monday. The National Hurricane Center gave the system a 90 percent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours.

If it does become a named storm it will be the fifth one of the Atlantic hurricane season and it will be named Emily.

A hurricane hunter plane investigated the system Monday morning, but it did not find a closed surface circulation center.

Hurricane hunters did find winds close to tropical storm strength, tropical storm warnings may be issued for the northern Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands.

Forecasting models indicate that this system may move through the Bahamas as a weak hurricane by the end of the week.

It is still way too early to forecast where this system will go or the strength of the storm, but interests near the southeastern coast of the United States should pay close attention to the track of the storm.
