GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- A campaign representative for Republican Rick Perry says former U.S ambassador to Canada David Wilkins will endorse the Texas governor's bid for the GOP presidential nomination.
The campaign representative with knowledge of the endorsement spoke on condition of anonymity so as not to pre-empt the formal announcement scheduled for Saturday morning in Greenville, Wilkins' hometown.
The endorsement will be the highest-profile backing from a notable South Carolina political player this campaign season.
Wilkins was a top fundraiser for George W. Bush's 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns and served as his South Carolina campaign chairman in 2004.
He was appointed ambassador by Bush in 2005. Before that, the Republican served 25 years in the South Carolina General Assembly and was House speaker for 11 years. Wilkins now practices law.
