Sumter County, SC (WLTX) - Continental Tire announced Thursday that it will build a new manufacturing facility in Sumter County, brining 1,600 jobs to the area.
The news was announced at a news conference at the Sumter Opera House with Continental Tire executives, Commerce Department officials, and Governor Nikki Haley.
A week ago, sources told News19 that a deal was close to bring the German tire maker to the Sumter area.
The plant is a total investment of approximately $500 million.
In addition to the 1,600 jobs in Sumter County, about 80 new positions will be created when the company expands their headquarters in Lancaster County.
According to Continental officials, the nearly one million square-foot facility will be built in an area along Highway 521. Continental expects to begin construction of the plant in mid-2012 and complete the facility in 2013.
By 2017, the plant is expected to produce about five million passenger and light truck tires, and that number is expected to rise to eight million by 2021.
Final hiring will take place in 2020.
