Columbia, SC (WLTX) - USC quarterback Connor Shaw and linebacker Devonte Holloman both have concussions and will be evaluated this week, Coach Steve Spurrier said Sunday.

During his teleconference with reporters, Spurrier confirmed that Shaw and Holloman suffered the injuries in Saturday night's loss to Arkansas.

Spurrier said both players will undergo tests this week to see if they will be able to play against Florida. They will not practice Monday or Tuesday, and Spurrier expects an evaluation on their playing status to be made either Wednesday or Thursday.

Backup quarterback Dylan Thompson will get the snaps in practice early in the week, Spurrier said, and would likely start if Shaw can't play. He also said the team would use running back/receiver Bruce Ellington more out of the wildcat formation.

In one other injury note, Spurrier hopes to have Antonio Allen back on defense. Allen missed the Arkansas game with neck spasms, and Spurrier said not having him certainly hurt.

Meanwhile, Spurrier said his team understands the importance of this week's contest.

"We realize that if we can beat Florida we can still win the East," Spurrier said.

He admitted that the Gamecocks' special teams did not play well in the Arkansas loss, giving up a kickoff return touchdown and getting a roughing penalty on a punt.

"We need to coach better," Spurrier said.

USC plays Florida at Williams-Brice Stadium at 12:00 p.m., a game that will be broadcast on CBS/WLTX.
