Calhoun County, SC (WLTX) - A pile of at least 250,000 tires can be seen on a private lot in Calhoun County--so many that viewers can spot the tire pile from satellite images.
The property is located between Highways 6 and 267 and doesn't have an address. The only road leading to the pile is an unnamed dirt road.
"We're talking about quite a few tires," said Boyce Till, the Risk Manager at Calhoun County. "It's a lot."
"We were contacted by a private citizen that there were some tire piles on private property," said Till.
The pile is so big it shows up on Google Earth. Till took a look at the pile in person and turned the investigation over to the state.
"DHEC took over and did their investigative work, and ultimately indicted someone," said Till. The warrant lists a charge of storing solid waste without the correct permits.
The man indicted is from Easley.
Till says a sitting pile of tires is an environmental concern and would be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The tires are now being moved.
Lee Tire in Jacksonville, FL, says, "We were contacted by the owner to assist them with the cleanup and disposal of the collection of tires on their property." Lee Tire estimates there are more than 250,000 tires in the pile. They expect to have the pile cleared by the end of the year and will properly process the tires when they arrive at the company's facility in Florida.
