Sumter,SC (WLTX)--The Sumter Police Department is investigating a New Year's Eve hit-and-run pedestrian accident.

A 24-year-old man that was struck had to be airlifted to Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia late Saturday night.
Authorities say the man is in stable but serious condition after being struck by a vehicle that refused to stop.

Police say shortly after 11 p.m. the man in dark clothing walked out in traffic and was struck by a person driving in a possible white GMC or Chevrolet pickup truck traveling southbound on 401 Oswego Highway,  The truck was coming into town and was heading toward the Lafayette Drive and Calhoun Street area.

Authorities found the man in the roadway of the first block of Oswego Highway near Grace Cathedral Church. The victim was first transported to the Tuomey Regional Medical Center for head and lower body extremities, before being flown to Palmetto Richland.
