Columbia, SC (WLTX)- The Leadership Columbia Class of 2012 has come together to help the Free Medical Clinic better serve the uninsured in the Midlands.
The Leadership Columbia program, which is facilitated by the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, brings together future leaders from various backgrounds in an effort to enhance their civic knowledge and network.
"Right now, the topic of healthcare is something that can't be avoided," said Rania Jamieson, a member of the LC Class of 2012. "We believe that is project isn't only timely, but it's necessary as so many people in the Midlands are in dire need of this lifesaving services."
Each year, the participants are asked to come up with a class project that will benefit the community and the Free Medical Clinic has been chosen this time around.
On Saturday, class members, civic leaders and FMC supporters gathered to celebrate the start of the collective effort.
Richland County Council Chairman, Kelvin Washington, said he has witnessed first hand what it is like to live without adequate healthcare. His brother, who spent years in the military, didn't have insurance and tried desperately to find treatment after being diagnosed with cancer.
"The experience my brother had really showed me the necessity of the Free Medical Clinic and what it can provide to the community and people in his condition," said Washington.
Washington said his brother, even though employed, was denied coverage based on "a preexisting condition", but he continued to work in hopes of providing a better situation for his family.
"So he's pretty much killing himself to keep the services for his family," he said.
The Class of 2012 plans to improve the FMC facility located on Harden St. as well as help revamp volunteer programs and host supply drives.
