Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A 15-year-old charged in connection with a beating in Columbia's Five Points district last summer will not be tried as an adult.

A judge decided Wednesday not to waive the teen into adult court. His case will be decided in juvenile court, and he would serve any time in the Department of Juvenile Justice facility.

The teen was among a group of juveniles facing various levels of charges after Carter Strange was beaten on June 20, 2011.

Strange suffered a cracked skull, several bones broken in his face, and had to have emergency surgery to stop a hemorrhage in his brain after the assault.

Four other juveniles, who did not directly participate in the beating, were given probation.

In response to the assault, the City of Columbia passed a juvenile curfew that bans anyone under the age of 16 from being in Five Points from 11 at night to 6 in the morning.
