Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Some lawmakers want the state to examine its laws dealing with alimony.

Orangeburg Representative Jerry Govan, a Democrat, says the proposed bill would make it easier for people to seek adjustments to alimony when they're planning to retire.

As written now, he says the bill could also allow courts to consider other information when addressing alimony appeals on the basis of a former spouse living with someone else or being in a serious committed relationship.

Govan says addressing the issue of alimony and retirement seems to be something several lawmakers agree on. He says most people who retire lose a big part of their income when they stop working.

"Of course this can have a very adverse affect. Of course if alimony is not adjusted to reflect that, then of course it can cause undo financial hardship on the individual who is paying alimony and is retied," said Govan.

The committee put the bill on hold until they can get more information from the legal community.
