Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia City Council voted for the first time to suspend a business license of a popular nightclub for violating the smoking ban ordinance.

The nightclub MetroLive was cited on numerous occasions for having patrons smoke inside the establishment. Columbia City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to uphold the suspension of the business license.

No one representing the night club was in attendance at the meeting. The city's business license administrator, Brenda Kyzer, said nightclub violated the ordinance on numerous occasions.

"If a business violates the ordinance more than three times in a six month period then we can suspend the license pending this revocation hearing," said Kyzer. "It's considered a public nuisance when you violate that ordinance."

Kyzer says the club can be fined each day for not operating with a proper business license. She added that the nightclub can appeal the decision.
