Columbia, SC (WLTX) - For many of our Midlands senior citizens, living home alone can be a discouraging and often times a difficult experience. One local program is making our elderly more comfortable through companions.
Inside the home of Herbert Grady, a Korean war veteran that is now a homebound senior, there's no shortage of smiling faces when senior volunteer Carla Adison comes to visit.
For four years Adison has volunteered with Senior Resources, a non-profit program that places seniors with homebound or frail seniors that need a little assistance.
"I enjoy showing him things and assisting him with things that he cannot do but would like to do. The desire is there," said Adison.
Volunteers like Adison will spend four hours a day, some three days a week at seniors' homes, reading, talking, but most importantly just being there.
"Instead of being companions or clients and they will call them, I'd like to be referred to as a friend because I really enjoy what I do," said Adison.
While Grady spends the majority of the week alone, he says the company of volunteers like Addison helps to brighten up those lonely days.
"Most of the time I have to be alone by myself. All by myself," said Grady. "It makes me feel a lot better you know? It makes me feel a lot better."
Grady isn't the only person getting something out of the program.
"Most of the people, they are home bound. They don't see other people. I do get the chance to see other people by coming out of my apartment. Because otherwise I would be in the same predicament," said Adison.
It's a programs putting senior volunteers with homebound seniors, making companions, friends, stopping loneliness one smile at a time.
"I get inner joy of knowing I made somebody happy," said Adison.
