Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Midlands Eye Care Clinic offered free eye exams to patients Tuesday in an effort to meet a need expressed during the SC Mission 2011 event.
"That really proved there were a lot of people out there with no other means to turn to to get vision care," said Russell Knight, CEO of Family Service Center. "You have a lot of people out there without health insurance, and even if they do have health insurance, the don't have vision care."
On the days it's open, the clinic expects to see 15 patients for every doctor working. If a patient needs more than a basic exam and glasses, they will be referred to an outside specialist.
"We'd love to be able to expand those services and provide better access to vision care," said Knight. "Based on the amount of money we have right now, that's all we're able to do."
"It's very helpful because glasses are so expensive," said Denise Mathis, a patient who is taking advantage of the clinic.
The Midlands Eye Care Clinic is scheduled to be open 2 Tuesdays every month and taking appointments now at 803-576-2847. Organizers say the reception office is only open on certain days, so patients should leave their name and phone number will get a call back to schedule.
The clinic is also looking for doctors willing to donate their time. They can call the clinic at 803-576-2847.
