Sumter, SC (WLTX) - A school bus driver has been charged in connection with a collision that injured two people last month.

Lauritha McGhaney has been charged with reckless driving, no seatbelt, and smoking on a school bus.

Police say back on March 8, a bus being driven by McGhaney was traveling south on Alice Drive. Officer say the bus then veering into the oncoming lane of traffic, crossed back over the center median, and collided with a car.

The driver of that car and a teenage passenger were taken to the hospital for treatment. They have since been released and are undergoing physical therapy.

McGhaney was also briefly treated at Tuomey Medical Center.

Police say they determined through their investigation that McGhaney "failed to operate the bus with due regard for the safety of others." Specifically, officers believe she lost control of the bus to pick up a cigarette that had fallen on a floorboard of the bus.

McGhaney has a court date on May 3 for the charges.
