Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Officals from DHEC say there is no public or environmental threat after a chemical spill shut down part of Highway 601 at the Interstate 20 exit in Lugoff Friday.
We're told a tanker truck at the Pilot Gas Station on 601 began leaking a poisonous toxic liquid.
Officials say the tanker was on its way to Texas. At the time the leak occurred, fire crews say the driver was trying to secure his payload.
Crews say the chemical the tanker was carrying is used to dilute other chemicals.
Haz-Mat crews and the Lugoff Fire Department had to detour traffic, but around 10:15 a.m. authorities say traffic was again allowed near the scene.
Officials from the Lugoff Fire Department say the spill was cleaned up by Saturday afternoon.
