Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Could the Columbia Blowfish swim across the river to Lexington County?

That seems to be the plan for the summer baseball team, according to Blowfish President Bill Shanahan.

The teams' current home, Capital City Stadium, was sold this week by the Columbia City Council to a developer. It's expected the land will be used for several retails stores, including possibly Walmart.

The move means the Blowfish will be without a place to play soon. Right now, it's not clear if the team would get to play one more year in Capital City Stadium, or if they'd have to find a new home in 2013.

Shanahan's pitching to have a multi-purpose facility built in Lexington County. Besides Blowfish baseball, the field could be used for baseball, football, soccer, concerts and other events.

He says he's been talking to leaders in the county, city of Cayce, and town of Lexington about relocating to their area.

According to Shanahan, he's looking for a facility that would seat between 3,500 and 4,500 fans.

"We hope that this could be a win-win-win for everybody, that the new development could happen, we could continue to play baseball here for one more season at Capital City park, and truly give it the farewell that it deserves," Shanahan said.

The Blowfish have been in operation for seven seasons.
