Columbia, SC (WLTX)- A United States Marine is walking thousands of miles to help homeless veterans across America.
On Saturday, Mac McQuown made his way into Columbia in hopes of bringing awareness to Project Foot.
"On September 11th of last year, I left my hometown in Stafford, Virginia and I'm walking to the capitol steps of all fifty states," said McQuown. "It's a 15 thousand mile walk."
McQuown said that trek will more than likely take about six years to complete. So far, the 50-year-old has walked more than a thousand miles and raised a little more than five thousand dollars.
"The goal is to raise a million dollars or more," he said.
It's a mission that has caught on thanks to social networking sites like Facebook. Susannah Sharpe brought her little girl along for a stroll to show support for Mac's mission.
"It's not about just sitting around talking about being patriotic," she said. "You actually go out and do what you can."
McQuown said this effort hasn't just helped other veterans. In fact, since he started walking he has dropped more than 40 pounds!
