Cayce, SC (WLTX) -- An American Classic "Drive-In Movie" makes a rare appearance in the Columbia area on July 4th at the Historic Columbia Speedway in Cayce.

The movie is being produced as a charity fund raiser for the Cayce Public Safety Foundation.

$5.00 per car will be collected for the foundation at the gate. 

The event will be held on the 9 acre grass infield of the speedway located at 2001 Charleston Hwy., about 5 minutes from downtown Columbia. The Movie will begin at dusk approximately 8:50 pm.

John Banks, Speedway representative said "With the 4th falling in the middle of the week, we decided to provide some family entertainment in a vintage American style Drive-In. Patrons will be able to watch from their cars or bring blankets and chairs and sit in front of a gigantic 40' screen."

The drive-in's peak popularity came in the late 1950s and early 1960s, with some 4,000 drive-ins spreading across the United States. Among its advantages was the fact that a family with a baby could take care of their child while watching a movie, while teenagers with access to autos found drive-ins ideal for dates.  They got their start in New Jersey on June 6th 1933.
