Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Over the past few years, you've seen stories about long-time Midlands businesses that had to close their doors because of the economy. But now, regrowth is here.
One decades-old Devine Street shop is expanding and more new shops have opened nearby.
"We've been in business over 60 years. I've seen the industry change but it still goes back to customer service," explains Perry Lancaster, of Brittons. To make that even better, Brittons says they're expanding their Devine Street store. "Additional dressing rooms, making it more convenient for our customers, larger selling area. And as I said, we're expanding some areas of the store - the ladies department, we're expanding our jewelry department," says Lancaster.
Over the past few years, many businesses have struggled just to make ends meet. Expansion, though, has made it's way back here. "Devine Street is definitely Columbia's upscale shopping boutique corridor," says Jennifer Suber, with Devine Street Association, "One of the great things about Devine Street is, in the past six months, we have grown exponentially. We have had a wonderful influx of businesses - not only ones that are new businesses, but ones that are expanding."
"MyKim, which is a wonderful women's clothing store - she's never opened a store and decided that this was the place she wanted to be," Suber goes on to explain, "KD's Treehouse started off on one side of the street in a small, retail shop and then actually grew so much that they had to move across the street to a bigger location."
For the folks at Brittons, their expansion means becoming an even bigger part of the community they've spent decades dressing.
