Kershaw Co, SC (WLTX) -- Tuesday night, Kershaw County Sheriff's Deputies stopped a Florida man on I-20 and found 102 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of his vehicle.
The deputy who made the stop called for backup after his drug dog detected something in the trunk of the 2012 Chevrolet. Other traffic officers responded and searched the vehicle, where they found two large bags in the trunk which contained approximately 102 pounds of compressed marijuana.
The driver, Donald Wayne Gillham Jr., from Sun City Center, Florida was arrested and charged for trafficking marijuana. The marijuana was in vacuum sealed bags, with dryer sheets to cover the odor. Each bag was wrapped in shrink wrap plastic. While the officers couldn't smell the marijuana, the drug K-9 immediately alerted the other officers.
They believe the marijuana came from Arizona and was to be delivered in Darlington County for distribution. According to Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews, the marijuana had an approximate street value of about $1,500 per pound, making this a $150,000 seizure, the largest of its kind by the traffic unit since its inception.
The 45 year-old man is being held in the Kershaw County Detention Center and is awaiting a bond hearing.
