Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Flash flooding in the Midlands Tuesday has left many with damage to their homes and car, but what can you do to help yourself recover after the bad weather has moved on?
"Most people in the Midlands don't carry flood insurance, in fact most people to carry flood insurance unless their insurance requires it," said Drew Theodore, President of Theodore and Associates Insurance in Columbia.
By noon Wednesday, his company had received at least 50 calls of people filing claims related to the weather.
"We've have some flooding to homes and businesses, we've had limbs that have fallen on roofs and damaged houses, cause water leaks in the houses, a lot of wind driven rain that came in under doors and windows," said Theodore, describing the damage.
He says what your insurance will cover depends the type of coverage you have and what happens.
For example, that branch falling on a roof and causing water leaks can fall under your home or business insurance. If waters seep into your property through the doors or windows, you'll need flood insurance for some relief.
"If there's no flood insurance than the insurance company's not gonna pay for any of the damage to the contents of the home, or to the structure of the home," he said.
If the high waters take their toll on your car Theodore says your basic or minimum liability coverage will leave you stuck.
"As long as you have the comprehensive coverage under your car insurance then you have coverage from the flood. Whether your car is sitting in a parking lot and gets flooded or you try to make it through what you think is a puddle and it ends up being a river," he explained.
Theodore says flooding insurance is administered by insurance companies, but underwritten by the federal government.
