COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina inmate who walked away from a crew doing grounds maintenance in a remote part of Fort Jackson has been recaptured.
Department of Corrections spokesman Clark Newsom says 27-year-old Jason Ryan Burr was captured in Robeson County, N.C., around 8 p.m. Thursday.
Newsom said Burr was attempting to steal clothes from a store when he was caught.
Officials said Burr slipped away from the work crew at around 12:30 p.m. Thursday on property that is part of Fort Jackson.
In 2010, Burr began serving a five-year sentence for receipt of stolen property. Newsom says Burr has a previous conviction for a vehicle-related crime.
Jail records show Burr was to become eligible for parole on July 20.
