Columbia, SC (WLTX) - USC's luck charm for the past baseball season has died.
Gamecock third baseball LB Dantzler tweeted Thursday afternoon that Reptar the Fish died Wednesday.
"Reptar moved on to a better place!," Dantzler wrote. "He was a great fish and helped us have a very memorable season! I'll always remember the little guy."
Reptar was Dantzler's pet beta fish. During a road series against Auburn this year, Dantzler couldn't find someone to look after Reptar, so he took him on the team bus. The team's record improved immediately, and Reptar was credited as a lukcy charm.
In the weeks afterward, the story of Reptar spread, and the phrase "Fear the Fish" was adopted by fans as a rallying cry.
But fans, don't fear: a new mascot could be in the works. Dantzler ended the phrase with the tease, "be on the lookout for a Reptar II."
