Sumter, SC (WLTX) - The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating a trooper involved shooting that led to one death around 6:30pm Saturday evening.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis says a Highway Patrol Officer shot a suspect near Beckwood Drive and Highway 521.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, Trooper TFC B.O. Stokes, pulled over the suspect for speeding. Based on evidence during the stop, Stokes administered a field sobriety test and determined the suspect was driving under the influence.

Officials say when Stokes attempted to place the suspect under arrest, the suspect resisted and a struggle ensued.

DPS says Stokes attempted to use his taser to subdue the suspect, but was unsuccesful. Stokes then discharged his firearm for fear of his life, according to law enforcement.

Sheriff Dennis has confirmed that the unnamed suspect has died.

Stokes will be on administrative duties during the SLED investigation.
