Sumter, SC (WLTX) --Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock has confirmed that the suspect killed in the trooper involved shooting was 24-year-old Devin Taylor of Dalzell.
Bullock says Taylor was shot twice - once in the chest and once is the stomach.
According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, the suspect was pulled over at approximately 6:30pm for speeding.
Law enforcement says that Trooper Stokes attempted to place the suspect under arrest for driving under the influence but the suspect resisted. Stokes then attempted to use his taser but when the attempt failed, he fatally shot the suspect, according to authorities.
We spoke with a family member who tells us what Taylor was doing moments before the shooting.
"Vanessa Playland was having a back to school event for the kids and we were riding the kids on motorcycles and 4-wheelers and having a cook out, giving them back to school prizes like book bags and pencils and stuff, we had the police department and fire department out there," said family member Perry Bradley.
"Before Devin even left he was riding on the 4-wheeler, giving his daughter a ride on the 4-wheeler as well and we were all just having a good time. We went from having a great family event to here now, it is just unbelievable. How do you go from a traffic stop to a funeral? I have no idea," said Bradley.
