Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The Midlands is reacting to the mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado that killed at least 12 people at a movie theater.

News19 has spoken to several theaters in our area that say they have no plans to cancel showings of "The Dark Knight Rises" due to the shooting.

We've also spoken to the Columbia Police Department which says will be doing security checks at theaters in the city.

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley spoke to reporters Friday morning and was asked about the shooting. She said "Michael and I are saddened that one this would happen in our country. But two, that people in Aurora who have to deal with this. It is senseless. The numbers are rising and we still don't know why it would happen. But I will tell you our thoughts and prayers are with us. It continues to remind us that we have to be vigilant, we have to be careful and life is not what it used to be."

Haley also ordered that flags be flown at half-staff to honor the victims.
