Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Wednesday's Powerball drawing is one of the largest in history, giving some folks in the Midlands a case of lottery fever.
And it's coming almost exactly three years after South Carolina's last Powerball jackpot winner. That's when a man won $260 million on a ticket he bought at a Columbia gas station. So News19 headed there to see if others were trying to make lightning strike in the same spot twice.
"I just believe that three years later, another winner might come out the same place," lottery hopeful Mannassah Hawkins says, "The first thing I would do is give 10 percent to the church, take care of my wife, take care of my family, take care of the community. "
Hawkins bought what he hopes is the winning ticket from the Murphy USA gas station on Garner's Ferry Road. It's a spot that's seen several winners before, including our state's last big one. "it is a huge drawing for us," says SC Education Lottery Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea, "This is the second $300 million plus jackpot we've had this year. It's been three years ago this month that Solomon Jackson won our last Powerball jackpot in South Carolina. So, the way we see it, this is our night!"
She adds that our state wins no matter what the numbers are, saying, "We win whether we have the jackpot or not because education wins."
But, most folks here are still hoping for their own personal win too. "I think I'm pretty blessed to be here to play it, so I think I got a good chance, just like everybody else," says Hawkins.
Of course, you can see the drawing right here on WLTX just before our 11 p.m. newscast. And if you haven't bought your ticket yet, don't forget that you have to purchase it by 9:59 Wednesday night.
