ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - A Holly Hill teen is getting 35 years in prison for the shooting death of a man on the South Carolina State University campus.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports that Circuit Judge Ed Dickson sentenced 17-year-old Julian Young to prison, calling the death a senseless act.

After a two-day trial, a jury decided Young shot Jonathan Bailey during a drug deal last year in a university parking lot.

Defense attorney Virgin Johnson argued no gun was produced and no testimony showed that his client actually shot Bailey. Johnson asked for a directed verdict of not guilty and a new trial, but the judge rejected the requests.

Ray Anthony Alston of Charleston is also charged with murder in the case, but he has not yet been tried.
