The Palmetto Compress Building on Blossom Street in Columbia.
Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The City of Columbia Planning Commission will not make any recommendations about the Palmetto Compress Building until a meeting September 10th.
In a work meeting Tuesday, members of the Planning Commission learned about how a proposed ordinance would influence the possibility of the buildings' demolition.
"If the current proposal on the table was predicated on the removal of the building, that demolition request would have to be proposed," said Krista Hampton with the City of Columbia.
Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin wants to prevent developers from tearing down the building and redeveloping the property into student housing.
In the Tuesday meeting, members of the planning commission indicated the property owners did not want to repurpose the building but tear it down.
A recommendation from the planning commission to City of Columbia Council will not come until September 10th at the earliest.
